Anna Maria Chavez

As a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the USA, Anna Maria Chávez began her career journey in the very same movement she now leads.Before become chief executive of the Girl Scouts, Chávez held numerous posts in President Bill Clinton’s administration, including senior policy adviser to former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater. She also served as deputy chief of staff for urban relations and community development under then-Governor Janet Napolitano. Chávez returned to the Girls Scouts in 2009 as chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas. She was appointed CEO of Girl Scouts in 2011. In 2016, Chávez was named as one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders by Fortune Magazine. Other honors include the 2013 Law College Associate Award from the University of Arizona, the 2013 Excellence in Community Service Award from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, as well as the 2013 Graciela Olivarez La Raza Award from the National Council of La Raza. In 2014, she was part of Fast Company’s annual list of the most creative people in business, and she has been recognized as one of the 100 Women Leaders in STEM by STEMconnector. In addition, the Arizona National Guard presented her with the Adjutant General's Medal and the Diversity Champion Leadership Award.Chávez is a graduate of Yale University, and she holds a juris doctorate from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. She has since been admitted to the Bar of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, the Arizona Supreme Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
